Christmas Climate Crisis Carols on Sunday December 22nd 2019

For the holiday season, rebels from Extinction Rebellion Calgary combine their love for Christmas carols with the pressing need for climate action by singing climate crisis carols. Rebels will gather on Sunday December 22nd from noon to 1 p.m. outside the Plaza Theatre (1133 Kensington Rd NW) and will sing revisited classics such as “We Wish You a Steady Climate,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Let it Snow” and more.

An Extinction Rebellion spokesperson will be available to answer media.

Extinction Rebellion previously sang Christmas climate crisis carols in protest at the ‘War Room’ launch last week in Calgary.

Who is Extinction Rebellion Calgary?

We are concerned and hopeful citizens of the earth. We are part of an international movement who understands that we are in a climate and ecological crisis, that mass extinction is already happening, and that human extinction is a real risk. We believe we can turn our climate grief into non-violent direct action.

What do we want?

Extinction Rebellion has three demands:

  1. The Federal Government must tell the truth about how serious our situation is.
Government must share with citizens a realistic appraisal of the situation based on the latest scientific understanding of the triple threats facing us: climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental destruction. Government must clearly state the implications of a failure to address these threats.
  2. Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
The Government must enact legally binding policies that include what individuals, communities, and businesses need to do to halt biodiversity loss, reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada to net zero by 2025, and remove the excess of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
  3. The Federal Government must create a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
A citizens’ body is needed to hold elected politicians to account for climate action on a day-to-day basis, separately from and in addition to the normal electoral process.
