Respect existence or expect resistance
What is happening on October 7?
October 7th is the start of a world-wide non-violent rebellion against the world’s governments for their criminal inaction on the climate and ecological crisis. In Calgary, Extinction Rebellion (XR) will gather in a family-friendly atmosphere at Poppy Plaza (Memorial Drive and 10th Street NW) from 4 to 6 pm. XR Calgary will be using non-violent direct actions at this event.
Who is Extinction Rebellion Calgary?
We are concerned and hopeful citizens of the earth. We are part of an international movement who understands that we are in a climate and ecological crisis, that mass extinction is already happening, and that human extinction is a real risk. We believe we can turn our climate grief into non-violent direct action.
What do we want?
We have three demands:
1. The Federal Government must tell the truth about how serious our situation is.
Government must share with citizens a realistic appraisal of the situation based on the latest scientific understanding of the triple threats facing us: climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental destruction. Government must clearly state the implications of a failure to address these threats.
2. Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
The Government must enact legally-binding policies that include what individuals, communities and businesses need to do to halt biodiversity loss, reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada to net zero by 2025 and remove the excess of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
3. The Federal Government must create a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
A citizens’ body is needed to hold elected politicians to account for climate action on a day-to-day basis, separately from and in addition to the normal electoral process.
