On Friday, September 25 Extinction Rebellion (XR) Calgary, Fridays for Future, Idle No More, Permeate Calgary and other partner organizations will publicly protest the Alberta Government’s failure to protect us from climate catastrophe, and indeed its active cooperation in the catastrophe. An Extinction Rebellion spokesperson will be available to answer media.
The action will follow Fridays for Future’s noon protest at City Hall. XR rebels and partners will march from City Hall to McDougall Centre, 455 6 St SW, at 1:00 pm. There will be a symbolic occupation which will include family-friendly activities such as singing, artistic performances, key speakers, and a die-in. The occupation will last till 4:00 pm.
This action is in support of the Climate Week 2020, a world-wide set of protests taking place from September 21 to 27, 2020.
Who is Extinction Rebellion Calgary?
We are concerned and hopeful citizens of the earth. We are part of an international movement who understands that we are in a climate and ecological crisis, that mass extinction is already happening, and that human extinction is a real risk. We believe we can turn our climate grief into non-violent direct action.
What do we want?
1. The Federal Government must tell the truth about how serious our situation is.
Government must share with citizens a realistic appraisal of the situation based on the latest scientific understanding of the triple threats facing us: climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental destruction. Government must clearly state the implications of a failure to address these threats.
2. Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
The Government must enact legally binding policies that include what individuals, communities, and businesses need to do to halt biodiversity loss, reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada to net zero by 2025, and remove the excess of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
3. The Federal Government must create a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
A citizens’ body is needed to hold elected politicians to account for climate action on a day-to-day basis, separately from and in addition to the normal electoral process.
